the sand underneath my feet is stone cold

waves crash in my eardrums 

an angry blanket strangling the shore

distant sounds come from the house

filled with people I know 

yet know nothing about

muffled laughter and cheering and that

all too familiar count down

five, four, three, two, one

midnight 

a new year, another one around the sun

wish I were sleeping

dreaming of something better than this

but I am awake to see the year turn

alone

no one to hug

no one to kiss

they’re all up at the house

dancing the champagne twist

it’s just me down here

well me and the sea and

the fireworks beginning

I start to cry seeing the colors shatter

so brilliantly above the horizon

and I make a pathetic resolution

one I’ll try my hardest not to break

that this year I won’t be like this

that this year I’ll be different

I’ll be someone else

someone

that’s up at the house 

someone new

not myself.
